The track and field athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games have wasted no time getting down to business in the City of Light, and by the end of the day Saturday, many more Olympic medals will be shimmering under the bright lights of France’s capital city.
The track and field competition at the 2024 Olympics began Aug. 1 and will end Aug. 11.
Among the events scheduled for Saturday are the second half of the men’s decathlon, the initial rounds of the highly anticipated men’s 100-meter dash, the semifinal and final of the women’s 100 meters and the final of the mixed 4x400 relay, an event that debuted in Tokyo in 2020.
The track and field events in 2024 are being held in and around Stade de France in Paris.

Ultimately, the day should belong to Team USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson and her quest for her first Olympic medal, along with the possibility of 16-year-old Quincy Wilson getting the chance to race for the United States in the final of the mixed 4x400.
But don’t be surprised by any noise made by Team USA’s Noah Lyles, who is looking to sweep the 100, 200 and 4x100. There’s also talk of him making an appearance in the men’s 4x400 relay, too. Prelim or not, Lyles should turn some heads Saturday.
The last time an athlete from the United States won the men’s 100-meter race at the Olympics was 2004 (Justin Gatlin) – then came a dominant run by Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who won it three consecutive times (2008, 2012, 2016) and is the only athlete in history to achieve that feat.
At 100 meters, Lyles is fresh off a personal-best time of 9.81 seconds at a recent Diamond League event, but his main competition will be Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson, who owns the year’s fastest time at 9.77.
Defending champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy also will be in the field for the 100.
Lyles won the 100, 200 and 4x100 at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, and is the favorite this week in the 200, for sure. More on that later in the week, though, as the men's 200m doesn't even hit the radar until Aug. 5.
